Dionysus, The God of Wine

What wines and Greek food have in common? The History of Wine itself is very interesting. It is believed that wine was introduced in Greece around 4000 BC and there is evidence, found on artifacts, that it was known to the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations.

Ancient Greeks considered that wine was a gift from the gods and worshiped Dionysus, a creature with the mind of man and the instincts of a beast, known as God of Wine.

Greek Wines & Your Favorite BZ Grill Dish

Stefanos Ziozis, Advisory Board for Wonderful Ethnic, talked to BZ Grill about Greek Wines, its history, how to conserve wine at home and also about Greek food and wine pairing with your favorite dishes on BZ Grill’s menu!

In the video below, Stefanos Ziozis introduces BZ Grill Blog’s readers to 3 different Greek Wines.

The first one is Megapanos Savatiano 2008, produced from selected grape of the ancient grape of Attica, Savatiano. We can say this wine has Pinot Grigio characteristics.

Haggipavlu Mantinia Moschofilero 2008, also a white, is the second one on the video. Suggested to fans of Chadonnay, this wine is a mix of wonderful aromas of exotic fruits, full bodied with lovely fruit and a long mineral, honey, fruit finish.

The third wine can be considered a very good introduction to the Greek wine market. The Red Silinos 2008 is produced from selected grape varieties and Agiorgtiko, Mavroudi, Mandilara, and from mild climate vineyards. If you enjoy food and wine pairing, the Red Silinos is perfect for grill, game, meat dishes with red sauces and spicy cheeses.

August 15th is a very special day in Greece, actually considered the second most important religious holiday after Easter. Virgin Mary Service is a very celebrated by Greeks, since a large majority of Greeks consider themselves religious. We can definitely say that Greeks are sentimentally tied with this day and the notion of Panagia.

The largest celebration happens all around the country today, 15th of August, because this is celebrated as the day on which is believed Virgin Mary physically ascended to heaven

If you are a tourist in Greece you should know that on the island of Tinos this day is celebrated like on no other. Pilgrims by the thousands come here to crawl on their knees up the steps to the church that holds the holy Icon. However, this day is also celebrated in almost every town and village in Greece, which means all the islands and hotels are full, and trips at this time of the year should be planned ahead of time.

The fact that this year the Virgin Mary’s Assumption Day felt on a Sunday made it just a perfect day for a holiday when people like to celebrate by going back to their home towns and spending time with their families

On the island of Tinos, this day is commemorated with special devotion. Thousands of pilgrims flock there, to crawl on their knees up the steps to the shrine. There are also special services associated with music, traditional dancing and feasting that often continues until dawn. At Agiassos on Lesbos, pilgrims start to arrive weeks before to take part in ceremonies and feasts. Similarly, albeit on a lesser scale, Petra and Stipsi (both on Lesbos) conduct extended celebrations. On Paros, the holiday coincides with the local wine festival.
